A videophone can be defined as a telephone, which has a viewing screen and a built-in camera. The main advantage of a videophone is that you can talk and see with a person at the same time. It gives the impression that the person whom you’re talking to is right in front of you. Videophones can also be used to make normal voice-only calls. There are many other uses of the videophones. For example, videophones are also used for the video conferencing. Videophones are also desirable because of its increasing commercial purposes.

How To Use A Videophone
Using a videophone is a cinch. A videophone looks just like a normal phone with camera and built-in screen. The only difference between a videophone and an ordinary voice phone is that the videophone is equipped with an integrated services digital network (ISDN) or digital phone line. A wide variety of video equipments is available now in the market. Videophones are more expensive than the normal phones because of the high technology integrated into these phones. The average cost of a videophone is around $1,000.

Some telecommunications providers and cable companies offer ISDN services. Due to high availability of these services, anyone in the U.S. and the UK can install a videophone. Generally, an ISDN telephone line has two separate channels in order to provide high-quality pictures. Once you have an ISDN-equipped videophone, you can start making calls. The only problem in this system is expensive. Video calls cost almost double that of normal telephone calls. This service is also not available in some countries. According to the telecom companies, the call cost will be significantly cut in the near future.

Use Of Videophones By Deaf Persons
Videophones are the result of recent advancements in the telecommunication field. This is a very useful medium of communication for people who are hearing impaired. Sign language can be used with this phone because of the good picture quality provided by most service providers. To do so, you are advised to sign slower than you usually would in a face-to-face conversation. Also, lip reading is difficult because of picture quality and a possible time delay between sound and picture.

Cell Phones Safety - Are They a Risk ?

Posted on October 26, 2008
By tech blogger in Uncategorized

Cell phones are everywhere and I believe they are here to stay. With the advent of cellular phones for public use came a whole host of issues that I don’t think anyone expected, at least not in the magnitude we are seeing today. There are two kinds of cell phone safety and then there is cell phone etiquette. There is practical cell phone safety, which addresses the safest ways for you to use your cell, and etiquette plays a huge part in this. The other safety concern is that there are some health risks to those who use cellular phones. We will look at each issue in turn and hopefully give people something to ponder.

Cell phones and driving are a big controversy. As a matter of fact many states in the United States are contemplating enacting legislation that would ban the use of cell phones in a car. While I think something has to be done about using cell phones while driving, I don’t think it is a practical idea to ban their use altogether in vehicles. I don’t know how it would be monitored except to develop technology that would block all numbers while driving except emergency numbers. Until such a thing occurs or people start refraining as much as possible from using a cell phone in their cars we must be extra careful on the road.

Driving safely while using a cell phone is a contradiction I think. There are however, some things you can do to improve your safety and that of others. The most important thing is to learn about your phone and all its features, (i.e. speed dial and redial). Memorize the keypad in the event you need to make a phone call while driving. Learn specifically about the speed dial feature. The numbers you should put on speed dial is your spouse, 911, your job, your child’s school, and the number of a close relative that is not your spouse. As it is conversations on the cell phone while driving will take your attention off the road.

If you have to use your cell phone while driving a hands free kit is a good choice. Conversations however, still should be kept to a minimum and where possible you should not talk if you are moving or in a hazardous situation (i.e. icy roads or heavy traffic). A speaker phone kit is available as well as a safety choice. Here again be mindful of when and where you are talking on the cell phone. While you may be able to maintain your attention on the road while using a speakerphone take care to ensure that the conversation is not intense and is as quick as possible.

Place your phone within relatively easy reach so you don’t have to fumble for it. You might not be able to get the phone without taking your attention off the road. The safest way to handle calls while you are driving is to let your voice mail pick up the call. You can always call whomever it was that called you. Do not take notes, or look for a phone number while driving. If you absolutely must dial a number while driving punch two or three numbers then look at the road and so on.

Cell phones operate using radio frequencies (RF) to make and receive calls. Government standards call for a low SAR. If it is a high number there is a serious risk of radiation emissions from your phone into your ear. High emissions heat tissue in very much the same manner as a microwave oven does. This essentially cooks the tissue. On the other hand however, low emissions have not been proven to cause any health risks. You can minimize the amount of exposure to radiation by properly using your antenna or not blocking it. If an antenna is blocked it begins to heat up and the radiation only has one place to go your ear. Usually if you hold your phone at the bottom of the phone you probably won’t block your antenna.

You can use your cell phone to call for help in the event of an emergency; emergency calls are free. Use your cell phone to be a ‘Good Samaritan.’ If you see an accident, a car on the side of the road with mechanical trouble, or a crime in progress, call 911. If someone is in danger you can call 911 as well. An example of this follows: while driving across a bridge I noted that a group of kids jumping from the edge of the bridge into the water below. There were sharp rocks below and anything could have happened.

Identity theft is also a serious concern with cellular phones. There is technology available that enables the recording of your frequencies, they are then decoded, and can be programmed into another phone using your information. People have been known to run up astronomical bills using this method. In recent weeks a new device has come on the market that jams cell phone signals rendering cell phones in a radius of just a few miles useless. Be responsible, be safe, and be a considerate cell phone user.

Cell Phones and Planes: A bad mix?

Posted on October 25, 2008
By tech blogger in Uncategorized

If you have spent anytime flying you are aware that the use of cell phones on planes has been taboo. The reason given is that aviation authorities are concerned that cell phone transmissions will somehow interfere with the proper operation of the airplane. The question has always been though, do cell phones really cause a disruption. “…Many (including pilots) … question whether a genuine problem exists,” the CAA says in a cell phone safety study. There have only been a few reported incidents of mobile cell phone radiation, and these were very minor like setting off a smoke detector in a baggage compartment.

Well, now that stance is changing, at least when it comes to the British Civil Aviation Authority. Recently the CAA changed the rules recently to allow wireless communications devices on airplanes.

This decision has been made as a result of an option on many phones called “flight mode” which disables the radio portion of the phone. As a result, passenger are allowed to use their phones much as they do their game boys, computers and other such devices.

In fact, in a few years, many of the world’s airlines will be offering cellular service and wireless internet on their flights.
So those that worry about cell phone use on planes, may need to get over it in rather short order.

And, just like other places in the world, we all will be putting up with people sharing intimate details of their lives with the rest of us. Progress marches on for better or for worse.

Why not save it to disk and share it online with friends and family. The sky is the limit! More importantly, you’ll end up saving money!
Think about it. With a digital camera phone, you can view your images right away! That means that if you don’t like a picture that you took, you can easily delete it. If you like it, store it and enjoy it! Remember, when you use a manual camera that requires film, you have no choice but to send it off to the lab for printing. You’ll end up paying for every single shot, whether good or bad. With digital images, you have the freedom to print what YOU want instantly, hence saving you valuable money and precious time! Why spend your time waiting to get your prints back from your vacation or a work function, when you can access them instantly on your phone camera!
Choose from top of the line cellular camera phones today! Again, these phones are being made to serve the general population, so it’ll be important for consumers to do their research before settling on a make and model. If it’s important for you to have high quality shots taken on your cellular phone with a camera, make sure that your telephone comes with at least 2 mega-pixels for high quality shots. It may be a little more expensive than the typical mobile phone, without the camera feature, but it’s proving to be well worth it – and if you’re a new subscriber, you may get the deal of a lifetime! You could easily get your wireless camera phone for free if you sign a contract!
Typically, higher end phones will also come equipped with many valuable features that one can use at their discretion. Undoubtedly, it is truly amazing what wireless mobile phones can do nowadays. Without question, cell phones are being used as a highly effective method of communication. Adding a camera feature to that list only enhances your already stellar communication device. So, if you’re thinking about getting yourself one of these amazing wireless camera phones, this is what you need to look for. First, you’ll need to pick from a wide variety of reputable cellular carriers. Narrow it down to a couple of your favorite companies. Ask your friends and colleagues to give you feedback about their phone and cellular carriers. It’s always best to go right to the source. If someone is happy with their service, they will let you know!
It’s also important to note that most of the bigger cell phone companies typically offer Americans the same types of deals. So, if you’re looking for more minutes during the day, free nation-wide long distance, or evening and weekend minutes, choose wisely! Many companies offer the same types of phones, so it’s best to choose what cell phone company will best suit your needs first. This also means deciding whether you want to go monthly or with a prepaid cell phone plan. Again, the choice is up to you! Going monthly offers consumers more value and bang for their buck, but some consumers can’t justify all the minutes and features. Some people use their phones in the case of an emergency only and don’t want to be burdened with monthly charges. Whatever suits your fancy, pick the phone, company, and cellular phone plan that rings true to your heart! Whether you choose a Sprint, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, or Motorola phone – be rest assured that you’ll have a great phone to call your very own!
So, get out there and explore your options. You’ll be surprised at just how much is readily available for consumers like yourself to enjoy! Let your cellular phone work FOR you. Use it as a personal organizer. Take pictures when you please. Get online! Most importantly, stay in touch! The lines of communication are open and ready for the taking. So what are you waiting for?

Cell phones run on various kinds of batteries depending on the manufacturer

Posted on October 23, 2008
By tech blogger in Uncategorized

Cell phones run on various kinds of batteries depending on the manufacturer, phone size or shape and features. There are basically four types of cell phone batteries: Lithium Polymer, Lithium Ion, Nickel Metal Hydride and Nickel Cadmium.
Lithium Polymer is the most recent type and applies the latest technology in DC power. This type of battery is light in weight and will not explode even if pierced. The battery elements are enclosed in platic pouches and do not have memory defects. They last about 50 times longer than Nickel Metal Hydride batteries.
Lithium Ion is also memory efficient and longer lasting than Nickel Metal Hydride batteries but they are quite lighter. They tend to be expensive and would only fit new models of phones. Most Lithium-ion batteries apply a fast charge technique to quickly charge up your cell phone up to 80% capacity and then slowly bring it up to full power in about two hours.
Nickel Metal Hydride is also memory efficient and lasts longer than the NIM type about 40 times. This type of battery is good for people who need rapid charging and if used with a car charger can be fully charged under 1 hour. The special formula permits the concentration of energy in a single pack – sometimes about twice the power of Nickel Cadmium. This type is preferred by a lot of mobile phone users because it lasts long and is cheap. Again, they are non-toxic and appeals to environmentalists.
Nickel Cadmium are the oldest type and has a lot of memory defects. Another severe disadvantage is that they will have to be totally discharged before you can charge them again otherwise you may irreversibly damage them. Again this type is highly toxic due to the presence of Nickel Cadmium and is gradually being phased out by cell phone manufacturers.
Batteries typically have 300 to 400 charge cycles in their life span. It is so because anytime you charge your battery, the battery loses away some of its potency and thus become diminished in power.
Cell phone batteries can be pretty expensive items if you consider the fact that a Nokia 3310 battery can cost up to $24.95. Here are a few tips to prolong the life of your battery:
Dont allow materials to get stuck on the terminals as that causes the battery to lose contact with the terminals resulting in improper connection.

Keep the batteries in a cool place and allow them to adjust to room temperature before charging as the sharp rise in temperature upon charging can damage them.
The life of your cell phone depends on the potency of your battery. Knowing how they operate and how to care for them can ensure that your cellular device runs and runs well for years.

Alltel Wireless offers only three plans. The Total Freedom Plan is ideal

Posted on October 22, 2008
By tech blogger in Uncategorized

Unlike many other cell phone companies that have several calling plans, Alltel Wireless offers only three plans. The Total Freedom Plan is ideal for those who travel extensively on business and need to keep in touch with clients and the home office, as well as family. It provides coast to coast coverage within the United States with no long distance or roaming charges.

You can get between 200 and 3000 anytime minutes, 1000 night and weekend minutes and 1000 mobile to mobile home minutes. The cost for this Alltel plan ranges between $39.99 and $299.99 a month depending on the amount of anytime minutes you choose. The cost per minute for calls over your plan minutes is between $.40 and $.20, again depending on the level of anytime minutes chosen.

Alltel relies on its National Freedom Plan to provide subscribers in most medium to large cities with coverage. However subscribers in smaller cities and rural areas or making calls to these places may incur unexpected charges. The benefit, however, is more anytime minutes in the same price range as in the Total Freedom Plan. For instance the National Freedom Plan gives 450 minutes for $39.95, while “Total Freedom” gives only 200 for the same amount.

The “Greater Freedom” plan is Alltel’s offering to the casual user who doesn’t do a lot of traveling or who is considering replacing their standard home phone with an Alltel cell phone. For under $30.00 a month you can get 300 anytime minutes. At $39.99 a month you get 700 anytime minutes, 1000 night and weekend minutes and 1000 mobile to mobile home minutes. Alltel’s mobile to mobile home minutes refers to calls placed from one Alltel cell phone to another Alltel user.

Alltel cell phone plans all offer the same basic features such as voice mail, caller ID, 3-way calling, call waiting, call forwarding and 411 information. Be cautious about these features, some of them are not covered by all levels of the plans and these charges can add up quickly. Recent research by Consumer Reports show that these seemingly minor add ons can add significant charges to your monthly bill. You need to make sure you know what your coverage area is, what is considered roaming and what the charges for these services are.

If you go prepared, know what type of service you need, make sure you understand all of the features you want and the associated charges, you will be sure to get an Alltel plan that is right for you. Alltel’s corporate philosophy is that simplicity or ease of understanding, means sales. This has allowed them to become and remain a viable contender in the confusing world of cell phone carriers.

With approximately 12 million customers and an estimated 8 billion dollars in annual revenues, Alltel has fine tuned their calling plans to insure that they are easy to understand. This simplicity has been a strong catalyst for the sales and longevity of this company.

Phones offered by Alltel are among the best on the market. Alltel cell phones are made by Nokia, Kyocera, and Audiovox. They have one of the largest selections of cell phones available today. You can get all the new “bells and whistles.” Do you want web access while on the road? Alltel can provide you with a phone that has that capability. Interested in voice dialing? They can give you that. You can also get speaker phones, color displays, stock reports, picture phones, cell phones that can be used as walkie talkies, advanced graphics and a collection of Alltel ring tones including hip hop, country, classical, movie theme songs, and fight songs. Before signing any cell phone contract you should investigate the available plans thoroughly to make sure that the Alltel cell phone plan you choose will suit your needs.

Cell Phone Review-Careful Consider Contracts

Posted on October 21, 2008
By tech blogger in Uncategorized

While researching cell phone reviews, it was learned that just the use of wireless services alone in the US generated a mind-boggling $157 billion in 2004. This was achieved by the industry while propping up 3.6 million jobs.

It has been estimated that the wireless services will further generate between two and three million more jobs. Undaunted, this industry continues to surge ahead at 15% per year.

As this industry continues to roll on like some out of control behemoth it has become known for not taking prisoners when it comes to carrier plans. If you are signing, it is binding. No getting away from it.
Due diligence must be your watch word before you sign on the dotted line.

The more investigating and questions you ask, the more you reduce the risk of ending up embroiled in a nasty situation. A contract that gives you what you need at the price you can afford is what you are after.

Whenever an employee terminates their professional services, management should always consider whether they really need to hire someone to fill the vacated position. So too with your carrier.

When your contract is up use the opportunity to survey other carriers. Do not just hop right back on the same old horse. It is vital that you understand what you are signing for beforehand.

My particular mantra is check the grapevine. Chances are if people are being burnt by a particular carrier the grapevine will know. Word of mouth is so much better or worse than the professional media.

Having ascertained that the carrier you are homing in on has passed the grapevine test lets consider your needs. How many calls do you plan on making? Who will you be calling? Will you be calling landlines or cell phones? How about local, interstate or international?

It is critical that you marry as best you can your calling needs with the rates offered by your intended mobile carrier. Requiring more minutes is far and away the chief reason for giving up one plan for another. Going over your monthly allotment usually brings hefty penalties.

The worst thing that can happen is for the fine print to trip you up. Do not let that happen to you. Read it carefully! If you are unsure of the feel of the contract hold off signing. Wait for the fog to lift, you will be glad that you did.

If you are a quiet, easily persuaded person do your business on the internet if that is an option. If it is not, then take your loud-mouth, say-the-first-thing-that-comes-to-her-mind cousin. You know, the one who gives you the hand in your face bit.

Talk to the majority of your friends. Where are they signed up? That may be something to consider. It is cheaper to call phones that are on the same network. However, some calls are more expensive than others. Put a block perm on them.

Look down the road a bit before signing. Sometimes switching horses in the same stable may mean fresh activation fees, certainly rollover losses and a longer new contract. Doing your homework can help you avoid headaches.

Cell Phone Plans-How To Come To Grips With Them

Posted on October 20, 2008
By tech blogger in Uncategorized

By the first six months of 2006 approximately 220 million US cell phone subscribers had signed on the dotted line. That is a whole lot of people using a whole lot of plans. As a matter of fact wireless tentacles reached out and touched more than 72 percent of the U.S. population.

If those facts do not set you back a few paces, try this on for size, it gives you a clearer picture of the cellular wireless behemoth we have in our front yard. For the first six months of 2006, the wireless money pocketed after bills were paid was almost $7 billion.

Hold on to your hat, here is the rub. For the first six months of 2005, the wireless money pocketed after bills were paid was $4 billion. A staggering increase period over period.

Network service providers such as T Mobile, Cingular and Sprint just to name a few are putting some good offers on the table. The cell phone service plans are as different as the faces that struggle to explain them.

The carriers are trying to include the needs of everyone into their varied plans and packages. For instance, you may primarily be interested in maintaining contact with family and friends because you travel so much. They have tried to accommodate you.

Maybe you are younger and enjoy the wireless games and the fun options associated with cell phones. You do a lot of downloading of ringtones and screensavers. Or you may only need a text messaging work horse. They have tried to accommodate you also.

How about those who enjoy being way out there on the cutting edge? Well known for having the absolute latest gadgets. Love the words multimedia, smart phone and now you want to ride the crest of the 3G wave. They have tried to accommodate you as well.

The basic ground level plan has the ability to bring the wireless behemoth right outside the door of the not so rich and famous. They conjure up plans that are attractive and affordable to the masses.

Many of these service plans piggyback on free phones. The cell phone is generally a one time cost. Studies have shown that most people replace their mobile every 18 months. It is not hidden under a bushel that the money is in the service plan, any service plan.

For instance, someone I know gets a real kick out of ringtones. Everytime their phone rang it had a different call to arms. He recently downloaded ringtones from an unfamiliar website. The very next month he received monthly charges for those ringtones.

He did not uncheck the box indicating monthly payments. Neither did he read their website terms. In his blind quest to have his favorite ringtones he did not even see the check box let alone think of the website terms. He will in the future though.

Some cell phone carriers cloak their contracts with red herrings. Are you sufficiently confused by that sentence? Maybe I should write carrier contracts! What I mean is this, what does the word data mean to you? You have to answer that, not me.

Your main concern is this. What does the word data mean to your carrier? Believe me it means different things to different carriers. Some take data to mean text messaging, email and music only! Downloading family photos may fall outside of your carrier definition of data. And you will receive a hefty fine (bill) for transgressing their data law.

10 reasons to buy the Blackberry 8100 Pearl.

This major update to the popular 7105t brings the Blackberry experience to a whole new level. Here are 10 reasons to buy the RIM Blackberry Pearl.

1. The Camera.
The Blackberry Pearl includes a 1.3-megapixel camera that features an LED flash, 5 times zoom and white balance controls. This is the first Blackberry to include a camera, and whilst at 1.3 Megapixel it is not as advanced as others on the market, it takes a great little photo and is a long overdue addition to the Blackberry.

2. MP3 Player.
This model includes other consumer features including an Mp3. The Blackberry music player supports playback of your tunes in MP3, AAC, AAC+, and eAAC+ formats. The handheld is also compatible with Java application and game downloads. You can create playlists as folders and shuffle and repeat songs within a certain folder. It also displays some track rmation, such as title, artist, and album art if available.

3. Expandable Memory.
Now that you can listen to your mp3’s on the go with your Blackberry you are going to need somewhere to store all your favourite songs, not just a few of them. The blackberry Pearl also sports a memory card slot.
This is the first blackberry to include this feature.

4. Size and Design.
The Blackberry Pearl is sleek and stylish unlike typical business smartphones. At a form size of 4.2 by 2.0 by 0.5 inches; 3.1 ounces, the Pearl fits easily into a pocket or handbag, and unlike previous Blackberry models it does not look over-sized and silly when making calls. The Pearl is smaller than the Treo and Sidekick smartphones. It has a glossy black and chrome finish and will appeal to business users and general consumers alike.

5. The Screen.
The Blackberry Pearl sports a 2.25-inch TFT screen that displays 65,000 colors at a 240×260-pixel resolution. The screen is super sharp, clear and is reminiscent of a miniature plasma screen television. It is great for viewing emails and web browsing. Also included is light-sensing technology so the Pearl will adjust its brightness based on the conditions you are in.

6. The Pearl.
Gone is the classic Blackberry trackwheel. This phone features a trackball below the screen (The Pearl). The Pearl is easy to use and allows for 4 way scrolling. Its sensitivity can be adjusted and when pushed in, it acts as a select button. Whilst Blackberry users who are used to the trackwheel might initially experience some difficulties adapting to the Pearl it is very easy to adapt to. New Blackberry users will quickly take to it.

7. Maps
The Pearl is also the first Blackberry to come with a map application. Blackberry Maps provides local maps and allows you to get text-based driving directions straight to your Blackberry.

8. Email.
This is the feature that made the Blackberry so popular from the beginning. You can sync with your company’s server with support for Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino, or Novell GroupWise to deliver corporate e-mail in real time (Push email).
You can also support up to 10 POP3 or IMAP4 e-mail accounts.
The email set up wizard is very quick and simple to use.

9. Voice Dialling.
The Blackberry Pearl now offers voice dialling so you can set up voice commands for your contacts and use them to dial numbers.

10. Use it with a Mac.
The Blackberry Pearl is the most stylish smartphone on the market, so it makes sense to want to use it with the most stylish computers on the market. This can be done using a program called Pocketmac. Pocketmac is the first program to allow Mac users to sync their crucial data between their Blackberry device and Entourage, Address Book, iCal, Now Contact, Now Up-To-Date, and even Stickies.
