Prepaid Cell Phones and Emergency Service

Posted on December 11, 2008
By tech blogger in Uncategorized

Find out the nitty gritty on prepaid cell phones and 911 service. Find out what prepaid cell phone companies are required to do and why.

Everybody is familiar with 9-1-1 service, which allows you to easily contact emergency services from your home phone. But what about your cell? Emergencies can happen when you’re away from home. And even while you’re at home, more households are moving towards a single-line solution, replacing their landline phones with mobile.

The FCC requires all cellular carriers to put through all 9-1-1 calls, even when the phone does not have an active service contract. Individuals who have medical conditions may do well to carry an emergency cell phone, even if they do not use a cell phone on a regular basis. It is also an ideal solution for the elderly, who may be at risk while out and about. Keeping an emergency cell phone in the car’s glove compartment, along with a portable charger, can help avert a disaster in case of a breakdown or accident in a remote area.

The so-called E911 (enhanced 911) service, mandated by the FCC, also requires carriers to implement a system that tells emergency dispatchers the location of the caller. This has been a part of landline emergency services for several years, and when you call 9-1-1 from your home phone, the dispatcher automatically knows your callback number and your fixed location. But on a mobile phone, there are some technological challenges. Fortunately, the cell phone companies stepped up to the plate and came up with a solution. In Phase I of the FCC mandate, carriers had to create a system that would tell dispatchers the cell phone number of the caller, as well as the location of the cell tower, which would provide at least an approximate geographic location. More sophisticated location detection technology uses GPS-enabled cell phones to determine the location of the caller in an emergency.

Phase II, scheduled to be fully implemented by the end of 2005, goes a step further by providing Automatic Location Identification (ALI), with precise latitude and longitude of the caller, to the emergency dispatcher. This capability has been incorporated into many newer cell phones, but there are still older cell phones still in use. If you plan to use your cell phone as an emergency backup, make sure you have a newer “location-sensitive” phone that is equipped to handle this service.

There is no charge for calling 9-1-1 from a cell phone; the E911 infrastructure is paid for with a small surcharge on normal cell phone services.

Stay Connected With Cell Phones

Posted on December 10, 2008
By tech blogger in Uncategorized

Gone are the days when phones were used only for voice communication. Advancement in cell phone technology now allows you to send text messages, take pictures, set reminders for daily chores and pay your bills. With the wide range of features available, choosing the right cell phone can become quite mind-boggling.

Currently, Nokia, Motorola and Samsung are the market share leaders for the global cell phone market, and offer a wide selection of cell phones to meet every person’s needs. Cell phone costs range from less than $100 to more than $400, depending on the specifications. Your choice of cell phone should be dictated by the features you would like your cell phone to have. The first thing to consider is the cell phone size. As your cell phone will be carried with you most of the time, a slim and lightweight cell phone is the best choice. Cell phones also come with or without flip covers, and nowadays all cell phones allow text-messaging services.

Cell phones come with varying storage capacity for contacts – from as low as 50 to more than 200. If you want to use your cell phone to take pictures, then in-built camera phones of more than one mega pixel should be considered. Multimedia phones also offer short-duration video and voice recording features. These phones also have slots to attach to external devices for additional storage of your favorite pictures, music and videos. Another important thing to consider is the cell phone battery life. Battery life is the hours of talk time the battery supports. Many cell phones normally come with 250 minutes of talk time.

Other cell phone accessories include hands-free or speakerphone features. These would allow you to make or answer calls even while both hands are occupied, especially while driving. Cell phones with bluetooth or infrared technology allow the phone to connect wirelessly to your PC without having to invest in an expensive data cable. WAP enabled cell phones allow you to check emails even when you are on the move. It also enables you to use your phone as a modem. Medium-range phones come with in-built radio and MP3 features. Some phones also provide the option of changing cases to match your clothes to the occasion.

Cell phone ringtones have become popular nowadays and are a great way to add style to your phone. All phones come with preset ringtones but some phones come with options that allow you to compose ringtones. Many websites provide ringtone download services for free or at nominal charges.

Techno dress-up: Personalizing your phone with themes

Posted on December 9, 2008
By tech blogger in Uncategorized

Bored with your phone? Give it a makeover with a unique phone theme. Phone themes are coordinated background images, color schemes, animations and ring tones. Most units come with a few phone themes, but why settle for something that several other million already have? (That would defeat the purpose of personalizing it, wouldn’t it?). Instead, head for the Internet. There you’ll find enough phone themes to dress up your mobile every day of the week, if you wanted to.

Most of the phone themes you’ll find on the Web are grouped according to category. For animal lovers, there are themes inspired by wildlife, marine life, dogs, cats, even exotic birds. These bundles usually carry a photo of a creature that will be used as a wall paper display, a ring or message tone that’s lifted from the sound it makes, and color schemes inspired by Nature. Just think of the “paws”-ibillities!

Admire a celebrity? Have her lovely face greet you from your phone each time you dial a number. (It’s the next best thing to actually having her number.) Bundles will sometimes include theme songs from a movie, or if available, a message alert recorded with her voice.

Indulge your Inner Geek with Star Wars or Final Fantasy phone themes, or any of the thousands dedicated to things like computer or arcade games, science fiction movies, and popular series like X Files or Lost.

Girls can personalize their phone themes too, with sizzling-hot pictures of the biggest Hollywood hunks, uber-feminine floral settings, or funky retro styles. Now you can text your friends about your date against a hot-pink background on one day, or set your ring tone to a calming Zen instrumental piece the next. It’s all about exercising your right to bring style to your mobile, which we all know is really a functional lifestyle accessory and not just a piece of equipment for you to send and receive calls. Let it reflect your mood, your personality, your image-of-the-moment. And unlike fashion collections, you don’t have to wait for a change of the seasons to transform your look!

When downloading themes, you have to check if it’s compatible with your unit. Some themes are configured for specific phones, and it’s best to avoid the disappointment of browsing through a category only to find out that you won’t be able to use it. Some of the websites will give you the option of signing up for an account to access features that pre-screen your options so only those that are compatible with your phone will be displayed in your search results. And contrary to popular belief, installing a phone theme won’t necessarily shorten your phone’s battery life. That’s because phone themes are very efficient, and usually come with utilities that optimize the use of power. So even if it’s animated, you won’t really feel the impact on your battery life.

They may, however, take up some storage space, especially those that come with a lot of features like animated backgrounds, and several long ring tones and message tones. If your phone has limited memory capabilities, you can store your downloads on a memory device.

Do Cell Phones Cause Brain Tumors?

Posted on December 8, 2008
By tech blogger in Uncategorized

In the past 5 years or so, cell phone technology has increased and human use of the cell phone has grown rapidly world wide. By the year 2003 it was estimated that 700 million people around the world were using cell phones – and that number only continues to grow. Since the number of cell phone users is at such a large amount, increasing worry about health concerns is becoming an issue.

The concern for brain tumors caused by cell phone radiation technology surfaced in the early ninety’s when someone claimed that they had a brain tumor caused by cell phone use. This case was however dismissed due to lack of evidence, but extensive research has been going on ever since.

Cell phones emit radio frequency radiation in order to transmit sounds. The amount of RF’s that are directly coming into contact with a person depend on several factors which include the distance you are from the base station, the length of the call and the age of the cell phone (older ones emit more RF’s than newer ones). There has been studies done in the past to detect any link between brain tumors and cell phone use, however none of the studies have proved to be substantial enough to prove any real evidence. Some people suggest using hand-free cell phone models since they are not pressed against the head, creating less exposure to your brain. There is no proof however that this is safer or not.

While there remains no proof that cell phones can cause brain tumors, you should try to lower your RF exposure if you are worrying about it. Try using a home or office phone instead of your cell phone if you are going to be making an extensive call. Or, if you have to use your cell phone for long periods at a time, try getting a head set, or holding your phone farther away from your head.

Cell phone technology has virtually only been around for a decade, so it is really impossible for scientists to get any long term rmation on the health hazards that cell phones may influence. Right now, there is little evidence to suggest that cell phones cause any type of long term damage, main thing to remember, is only time can tell.

This article was not intended to cause panic or distress, its just hear for interest. By no means do I bash cell phone companies. Thanks for your understanding.

The Affordability Factor of Mobile Phone Games Downloads and Mobile Tones

Posted on December 7, 2008
By tech blogger in Uncategorized

The downloading of mobile tones, mobile phone logos as well as mobile phone game downloads has become a global pre-occupation. Some of the best categories of mobile tones such as true tones, real tones, name tones and buddy-name tones are easily available for a reasonable price and mobile phone games there is no reason for anybody to worry. The multitude of mobile phone tones, mobile phone logos and has made an impact on the minds and hearts of users from different parts of the world. The best quality in mobile tones, voice tones, real tones, mobile phone game downloads, etc. is up for grabs. It has become increasingly difficult for a person to keep himself aloof any longer from some of the best forms of mobile content that are on offer.

One of the major factors that has fuelled this demand for mobile phone logos, games and different forms of mobile ringtones such as funny ringtones, apart from their value as a means of customizing handsets, has been the prices at which they are available. Users need to spend a nominal amount to listen to some of the best tunes as their mobile tones or maybe experience the thrill of some of the most challenging downloadable games for mobile phones.

So, the trend of rise in the prices of downloadable mobile content is expected to have significant repercussions on the entire industry. The rising prices of mobile phone game downloads as well as the enhanced costs of other forms of mobile content such as downloadable mobile tones and logos should be analyzed in this context.

There are several opinions and different viewpoints on this particular topic of whether the rise in prices of downloading of mobile ringtones and other forms of mobile content is justifiable and tenable. The opinions regarding the market dynamics of the business of mobile tones and other forms of downloadable mobile content differ depending upon the interests of the persons believing in them.

The business of downloadable mobile phone tones, games and mobile phone logos has become a lucrative one. People want more and more of the best of ringtones and games and are paying up for downloading the same to their innovative handsets.

This growing business in ringtones and logos is having a significant impact on the music and entertainment industry. Most of the popular ringtones are tunes from original songs that have topped the popularity charts in different parts of the world. Therefore, the contribution of the music industry and the artists and composers of the tunes can in no way be ignored.

Some sections of the music industry believe that the prices of the ringtones, which had been set low to stimulate demand, should now be enhanced. With the growth in the business of downloadable mobile content such as mobile tones, recording companies are asking online retailers for higher prices for song downloads.

However, there is another opinion on this subject. An analysis of the industry shows that music lovers and mobile phone users had been cajoled into downloading mobile phone tones and mobile phone logos from authentic sources. If the prices of downloads are increased at this stage, they would shift back to downloading and using pirated versions of the same. According to believers of this school of thought, the music companies cannot increase prices of downloads and at the same time deal effectively with music piracy. The time is not right to enhance the prices of downloadable mobile content and markets should be given proper time to develop if music labels expect to win the battle against illicit downloading services. Therefore, piracy and illicit downloading have to be totally removed before starting a process of hike in prices.

Prosecution needs to be in place for illegal mobile phone game downloads or the downloading of ringtones and other forms of mobile content. The fear factor for being punished for downloading and playing stolen music is expected to keep users away from pirated music tracks.

Thus, we can conclude this discourse by stating that the as of now, one of the major preconditions for users downloading mobile content is the prices of the same. If cheap ringtones and reasonably priced downloadable games for mobile phones are available, users would be more than happy to download them to their handsets.

Funny Ringtones

Posted on December 4, 2008
By tech blogger in Uncategorized

Tired of hearing the usual ringtones all over town? Just at the coffee shop this morning you heard that annoying Nokia tune coming from at least three different people, and what about that generic ring-ring that reminds you of the office phone when you’re walking down the street on a sunny day? We all need to add some fun to our lives now and then, and you don’t need to brush up on your punch lines to do it. Yes, aside from the imminently useful functions we all know about, your trusty cellphone can be used as a source of amusement for you, or depending on your ringtone, a source of great irritation to those around you!

Luckily, there are a huge number of funny ringtones available today for nearly every kind of cellphone – and for every kind of personality. You can download the perfect ringtone to go with your mood, current obsession, and for more fun, match it with a person on your address book. This means you’ll know your boss is calling when you hear Darth Vader’s march, or better yet, an agonizing scream. But seriously, if you’re a movie buff, you’re sure to have hours of fun with some of the film-inspired ringtones around – from the Terminator’s harsh Austrian accent rming you of a call, to the unmistakable Tarzan howl replacing the monotonous “ring-ring” on your phone. And its not just Stars Wars fanatics who are sure to get a hoot out of Yoda saying “Answer the phone you must” or “Press the button to fulfill your destiny”. Who wouldn’t giggle (or gawk) at the sound of Jack Nicholson, Robert de Niro or the throaty voice of Dirty Harry (Clint Eastwood) telling you to pick up the call?

For comic types and practical joke lovers, a funny ringtone has got to be part of your everyday repertoire, and here you truly can go nuts. Try the bugle call-charge! ringtone, which is sure to grab attention on a crowded bus. The classic silly fart is another gem for those quiet times when lining up at the bank. If you want something a little more convincing, try the laughter fit and watch the person behind you try not to giggle. With an endless list of amusing ringtones, you can be funny without even trying. One word of advice though, stay away from the 50 mm machine gunfire ringtone at the airport. Others may just get the wrong end of a stick with that particular one.

The list of entertaining ringtones spawns even to that of political icons. Imagine Tony Blair’s voice enumerating your cellular phone’s destructive prowess. How about George W. Bush reminding you of an incoming call? Or Prince Charles telling you politely that you have a call coming through? These political movers and shakers are here for one purpose- to take your calls. Beats voice mail, doesn’t it?

For the non-political minded, there are still bound to be some ringtones to tickle your funny bone. Ladies, what about a sexy male voice telling you how gorgeous you are? Or the leery construction-worker wolf whistle? For the boys, maybe a sultry Latina voice is more your style, or even the infectious yawning tone? You can even try to test if the ringtone actually transmits the yawn to the person next to you.

Finally, the new breed of personalized ringtones are here not just to add a little ego to our lives, but some fun as well. You may not have the latest hi-tech robot at home to do the dishes, but your cellphone declaring “Eric, you have a phone call” can make you feel like 21st century boy.

MP3 Ringtones – Inject your own grove into your daily grind.

Posted on December 3, 2008
By tech blogger in Uncategorized

Mobile phones have become one of the most prominent status symbols. It has gone beyond a mere tool to make and receive calls. It’s an expression of identity; a fashion statement; and with Mp3 ringtones, a way of injecting your own groove into your daily grind.

An Mp3 is a compressed audio file. For years, music lovers have exchanged these files on the Internet, playing them on their PCs or from dedicated Mp3 players. But then the mobile phone companies latched on to a brilliant idea: why not use those music files as ringtones, replacing the dull and sometimes annoying clanging sound that has been the trademark alert for incoming calls.

There is a wide variety of Mp3 ringtones, as wide as the range of music itself. From Mozart to Madonna, the Beatles to Britney Spears, or even commercial jingles, national anthems, cartoon themes, gospel music, nursery rhymes, even beat poetry. If you’ve ever hummed it, sang it, or tapped your feet to it, there’s an Mp3 version waiting to be played on your phone.

Mp3 ringtones can also be a good measure of how a movie or a sitcom has infiltrated into pop culture. There are ringtones that are actually snippets from famous scenes of Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings; while themes from The Brady Bunch bring smiles to anyone who has ever watched the show.

But there’s more. Mp3 ringtones aren’t even limited to just music. You can pick from a wide variety of sounds. A baby crying. A cow mooing. A woman moaning in ecstasy (how’s that to break the monotony of your board meeting?).In the Philippines, when wiretapped phone calls between the president and an election commissioner revealed possibility of election fraud, fragments of that phone call were even used as Mp3 ringtones—either as a sign of protest or to make fun of the situation.

All these ringtones are easily downloadable, but for those who truly want a unique sound they can even make their own ringtones. Some record the voices of their children. Others save romantic missives from a loved one. People also record the laughter of friends, or a fragment from a child’s Christmas performance, or even a beloved pet’s barking. While other people may not appreciate the Mp3, the fact that it has a personal meaning makes those ringtones music to the owners’ ears.

So why do people use Mp3 ringtones? The same reason they pick the shirt they are wearing: it reflects the owners’ personality. When they say my phone, they mean it in more ways than one. Sociologists say that people are driven to express identities in external symbols. It is part of our communal nature: this is me, this is the group I belong to. Primitive societies wore jewelry beads and animal teeth; some developed tattoos; and later on, developed clothes and other accessories. The phone is no different. Like feathers on a tribesman cap, it signals to everyone else who we are.

Fallout of Banner Advertisements in Mobile Games

Posted on December 2, 2008
By tech blogger in Uncategorized

Mobile phone games and mobile Java games are among the more popular types of mobile content. Along with mobile ringtones such as monophonic ringtones, polyphonic ringtones and real tones, mobile games also feature prominently in many a mobile phone handset across the globe. Phone users often download mobile phone games in categories of their choice to make their handsets interesting and entertaining!

Mobile phone games in different categories and attractive formats are offered by network providers, game publishers as well as online gaming sites. The users are charged for the costs of download of the mobile phone games; which sometimes deter them from downloading certain mobile games to their handsets.

But not any longer! Special software for the incorporation of banner advertisements in mobile phone games has been developed by Motorola. Another feature of the software is that it allows interactive gaming with other players, wherein players can use short messaging service to interact with others.

This development is expected to have far reaching consequences on certain issues dealing with services related to mobile phones. New ways of paying for mobile phone services would be developed in the future. The shape of mobile phones, as we know them today, is also in for a complete overhaul.

Mobile network operators would be interested in inserting advertisement into the mobile games. It would become possible to offer mobile phone games absolutely free; which would in turn encourage more people to join specific networks.

With easy accessibility, mobile games would touch the lives of a still larger segment of the world population. Better versions of interactive mobile phone games would also be developed. Thus, the trends in the mobility marketplace point towards a bright future in mobile phone games and mobile Java games.

All you can hear: Different ringtone genres

Posted on December 1, 2008
By tech blogger in Uncategorized

By: Philip Nicosia

It may come as a surprise for people who are not very involved in personalizing their mobile phones that choosing a ringtone can be a very tiresome and confusing task. Why? Because of the sheer amount of choices that a mobile phone user has to wade through in order to get the ringtone that he wants.

First of all, he has to consider what type of ringtone he wants to use. Does he want the old school monotone ringtone that was made popular by the early Nokia mobile phones? These are the ringtones that play melodies one note after the other. He may also choose a polyphonic ringtone, which is a more melodic choice compared to the drab monotone ringtone. Of course, if his mobile phone is capable of supporting it (which most new models can) he can opt to use music ringtones, which are actual pre-recorded pieces of the actual music. This is the best available ringtone type out there and is the acknowledged favorite, especially among people who really love music.

Having gone through the ringtone types, the choice just gets wider. There are so many companies online that are specializing in bringing ringtones to your mobile phone that each one would offer unique ringtones that would catch the attention of consumers and hopefully entice them to buy the ringtone. But aside from the many companies out there, a mobile phone user has to choose from so many available genres of ringtones available, especially those for music ringtones. The choices are so varied and so many that one would be hard pressed to choose which ones a mobile phone user would like to install on his phone as a ringtone.

Some of the most popular ringtone genres are:

Funny ringtones – These are ringtones with an obvious comedy bent. These could be hilarious one liners, missives or dialogues. It is not uncommon to hear funny ringtones that try to parody certain scenes in famous movies or TV shows or maybe even funny sounds.

Bollywood ringtones – These ringtones are all about the magic that is brought by Indian films. Indian films are a strange and wonderful film genre. The formula that Indian films follow are quite different. Whether it be drama, comedy or even action, a movie will not be complete without song and dance numbers. Most Indians believe that a movie without this element makes it incomplete. These fun-filled Bollywood songs are now considered as great ringtones because it exudes the tongue-in-cheek fun and bombastic romp of those crazy Indian films.

Music ringtones – Music is by far the most popular ringtone genre that mobile phone users prefer. Every single person has a particular song or type of music that he loves and these preferences can act as great ringtones. Of course, music ringtones have as many genres as there are different types of music out there. Whether you like pop, rock, reggae, or even classical,, there most likely be a ringtone that you can download or buy online. Based on a recent study, the most popular genre that mobile phone users choose as ringtones are music in the rap/hip hop category.

Different sorts of ringtones and genres

Posted on November 30, 2008
By tech blogger in Uncategorized

By: WM

There are a lot of genres and sorts of ringtones in the ringing world and in this article I’m going to explain what everyting is and means.

Monophonic ringtones
Monophonic ringtones are ringtones wich are based on one single tone. You can say they’re made with only one “instrument”. Monophonic ringtones were the first ringtones available for your mobile phone. But now they are kind of fading away because of the other “better” sorts of ringtones for your mobile phone.

Polyphonic ringtones
Polyphonic ringtones are the follow up for monophonic ringtones. They’re based on more tones (instruments). Almost all phones support them because they’re beginning to become a little old. But there are still a lot of people who have polyphonic ringtones on their phone because they are the best quality ringtones in the lowest price area.

Mp3 ringtones
Mp3 ringtones are also called realtones or real ringtones. And it’s totally new in the ringtones world. Mp3 ringtones consist of real mp3 music from the real artist. But because it’s the real music, you have to pay more for the realtones because of the payments to the real artist of the song. But they sound a lot better when your phone ‘rings’.

Truetones
Truetones are realtones, but they’re real sounds. Mostly funny sounds, like a mouing cow, or a fart. These truetones are very popular with kids because they sound so funny. Also the truetones are based on mp3 so not all mobile phones support them yet. But they probably will in the near future.

Nametones
Nametones are also mp3 ringtones. They are ringtones where you get called by your name. Something like: Hey pete! your phone is ringing, pick it up before it’s too late! They are very cool to have because you litterally get called. But still not all the mobile phones support them because nametones are based on mp3 and not all phones support that yet.

Videotones
Videotones are going to be the next big thing. You do not hear just a realtone but you also see the video clip when you get called. So you can also watch the music video! But there are still very little phones who support it. But probably in the near future they will.

Ringbacktones
Ringbacktones are ringtones wich can be listened by the caller. Instead of the beep….beeep you hear a ringtone. But it will probably flop because it has no use for the owner of the mobile phone, because he after all has to pay for it. There are allmost no mobile phones which support ringbacktones.

Irritones
Irritones are irritating ringtones. Mostly realtones. You can find a lot of irritones on cooleringtones.net for example. Those irritones are specially in favour of children. But they are very irritating! :)

Well, these are probably all the sorts and genres of ringtones available for now. But there will probably be more sorts available soon because this is a very fast market that changes all the time.
Also, all the items suggested in this article, except the ringbacktones and the videotones are available on www.cooleringtones.net.

The number of cell phone users have grown tremendously over the years. It is quite unprecedented to think that millions of people are already using a technology that could still be considered just getting out of its infancy. Of course, because of the insane level of acceptance for cell phones it is but natural that other markets that can be considered as products of the cell phone craze have popped up to take advantage of the public’s fascination with cell phones.

The market has been flooded with many phone-related products ,accessories and utilities. This phenomenon can be directly linked to the fact that if people are not using their cell phones, they would like to watch it. This attraction for looking at cell phones has resulted in the rising popularity of cell phone screensavers. Cell phone screensavers are just like any other screensaver in that it is a picture or maybe moving graphic that is activated when a cell phone has been left in a state of inactivity for a preset period of time. Of course, the time is set by the user of the phone.

Cell phone screensavers are a very colourful and arresting addition to a cell phone although these types of screensavers are harder to find or get hold of compared to computer screensavers. But this situation is changing because more and more people want to install screensavers on their phones. This increase in the market for screensavers will only mean that screensavers for cell phones will become more readily available soon. At present there are phone manufacturers that already incorporate some screensavers as a stock feature on some of their phone models. Screensavers can also be downloaded on the internet or accessed from the service provider that provides your cell phone line subscription.

Cell phones that have an included phone screensavers as a built in feature are gaining ground in the market. There are phone manufacturers who only put one screensaver in their phone handsets while others give users a choice by putting in more than one screensaver. Of course, it is in the internet that cell phone users can go crazy and get the screensavers that they want. The internet offers cell phone users more options in terms of the kind of screensavers that cell phone owners want. There are so many genres that they can choose from for their phones that can fit not only their personalities, likes and hobbies but even their moods. Some of these screensavers can be downloaded for free while others will require a user to pay for the right to download the screensaver.

But before downloading any screensaver from any of the online sites that provide cell phone utilities and accessories, the first thing a user must do is to identify the size of his cell phone’s screen. Some of the most common cell phone screen sizes are 128X128, 101X80, 128X160, 176X220, or 174X132. A user must identify the correct screen size as well as the compatibility of the screensaver with the cell phone before downloading and installing the screensaver in order to avoid any unpleasant compatibility problems or cell phone crashes.
